Special Features: Bonus book which gives a comprehensive track by track critical analysis of every T-rex studio album from 1970-1977.

FEE'S REVIEW OF 'INSIDE T-REX'

Here are just a few initial thoughts having watched both DVDs straight through to see what parts of my interview the production team had used.

Paul Fenton and I met up in London and travelled across town to the interview location together. It was great to see Paul again. He is a lovely man as well as being a terrific drummer. I look forward to seeing him and the rest of T-Rex the band playing soon. Cummon Paul - Get those gigs booked :-)

It's always a worry when giving interviews that you'll be quoted out of context, but I'm pleased to say I'm happy with the DVD. It works and my parts slot in nicely with the other contributors.

In many ways it is a daunting experience being interviewed. As soon as I said that teenage girls have smutty minds and that phrases in songs such as "Bleached on the Beach, I'm Gonna Tickle Your Peach" and in Jeepster "I'm gonna Suck Ya" got the teenage girls imagination going I looked at Gary and said "I bet you're going to use that!!" And of course they did! But Hey Girls - "Am I Alone on the Riff Here?"

As I was involved with the making of this DVD Set I can't really review it impartially. Hopefully though we'll be able to put up an independent review soon. Or more than one maybe?

If you have this DVD Set and would like to submit your thoughts please Inside_T-Rex_Review@Marc-Bolan.org

I'm also involved in TWO other Marc Bolan & T-Rex Projects - GOSH! Some of the visitors to the Tree last September 16th will have seen one of the camera crews there. There is a video clip on the 2004 Page (Filming etc @ The Memorial Gardens & Tree). But until they are completed it doesn't seem appropriate for me to disclose the details as I'm sure the programme makers will do that in their own time :-)

I can say though, that one of the projects is not the forthcoming DVD/CD 'Marc Bolan - Ride On'. We heard that another 'Bolanite' had chosen not to be involved because he was concerned about the 'taste' of other DVD's in this series. He, like us had declined to be involved in the 'BBC Choice' 'Marc Bolan Rock Shrine' programme and it turned out quite rightly so. The 'Rock Shrine' producers wanted to make Bolan fans appear 'strange' and so the sensible answers given by my friend David, for example, who was interviewed for the programme were not used, because they did not fit the 'image' the producers wanted to portray.

Having now watched 'Inside T-Rex' I'm pleased with it and hope you'll all enjoy it.

REVIEW BY ADAM FRONTERAS

I Got mine from Amazon, it seem,s the lead time is a bit misleading as I got mine pretty quick, anyway I have posted a review on Amazon but what are my thoughts.

Well As a documentary its fair and good and if you want to be talked through each of the hits and his life then fine. There was nothing new in to stories for the fans (apart from me to say to Fee how can you say you preferred Teenage Rampage to Dream!!!! :-) . The chats were interesting though I did not know who the record producer was/is. So for me the actual interviews with Chris Welch, Beep and Paul Fenton meant more although of course Paul Fenton could only realistically comment on a very small period. It could have done with Bill Legend and TV.

For the fans though I suspect it was annoying having the concert footage cut/spliced with interview segments recorded over it. Pity the DVD did not give an option of Sound Track without interview commentary. I also felt the segment on ILTB used the slightly slower TOTP live version rather then the more up beat actual singled which detracted from it and semi justified some of the comments. The video footage was perhaps spoilt by often being in a small box in the middle, probably to not show the quality of the film copies. The budget obviously did not run to re-mastering and cleaning the footage or making sure master copies were used.

Although it was a useful 2hr documentary on the T.Rex years (pre 1970 was very much skipped over) It may be too long for the average viewer and lacking in actual complete footage songs for the fan. It would be good to get a video with all the hits cleaned full wide screen - roll on BtB

POST SCRIPT:  Thanks Adam. As everyone knows Kev isn't a Bolan fan & he feels that non-Bolan fans will enjoy it and that it gives a very balanced view. As you got your DVD from Amazon OK Adam we've added them (both in the UK & US) to the 'Buy on the Web' Section. I agree with you on the "pre 1970 was very much skipped over". The sub-title is '1970-1977', but even so I'd have liked to see at least a littllle time spent on pre-1970 (But then as Steve Took's Biographer I would say that wouldn't I?)

REVIEW BY CARL EWENS

It's a good overall DVD but the interviews leave a little to be desired.
Some of the people interviewed are not 'all there'.
Chris Welch and Fee are good, BP Fallon is cool of course, and Paul Fenton is just about passable, but some of the other people are just rambling nutters really.

Plus, nothing really new or truly interesting is said about the music, it's just the same old cliches being trotted out on the whole. It seems like a crime in a lot of ways that the earlier Tyrannosaurus Rex albums are ignored, especially since there is very little to separate the first T.Rex album from A Beard Of Stars. And, of course, the albums from Zinc Alloy to Dandy are sort of maligned really. Dandy is given more praise than it deserves because it was Marc's swansong (not that it's a bad album) and Zinc Alloy, which is a very ambitious work, is passed over as if it were a drunken singalong!

In actual fact, Inside T-Rex is no more than a cash in on the release of Born To Boogie, and it won't be the last. It's to be hoped if anyone attempts a realistic reappraisal of Marc's work, it is done with a little more depth than this.
