THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY of MARC BOLAN'S DEATH WAS ON THE 16th SEPTEMBER 2002. HIS 55th BIRTHDAY WOULD HAVE BEEN 30th SEPTEMBER 2002. ON FRIDAY 27th MICKEY FINN'S T.REX PLAYED A VERY SPECIAL GIG AT THE PRESTIGIOUS
NIGHTCLUB 'PENNINGTON'S' TO AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE OF WELL OVER 2,000 PEOPLE! TAG FOUNDER & SECRETARY (& STEVE PEREGRIN TOOK'S BIOGRAPHER) FEE WARNER WAS THERE TO MEET THE PEOPLE, ENJOY THE VIBES & COVER THE EVENT IN VIDEO & PHOTOGRAPHS FOR TAG. Judge Trev & I left Brighton bright & early on Friday Morning to meet up with Rolan Bolan on the London to Leeds train. Rolan had not been to Pennington's & it was a pleasure to be able to fill Rolan in with the details of the club (including the fountains containing Goldfish! in the loos), which is in my honest opinion THE best club I have ever visited! The sound & lighting systems are awesome! I know Rolan was pleased to hear that the last time I'd seen Mickey's T.Rex at Pennington's they had played to a crowd of over eight hundred & I think he realised that this was THE gig of importance over the anniversary period. After an enjoyable journey we all arrived in Leeds & were collected by members of the band for the trip to Pennington's in Bradford. (Tanx Guys!) At the club Rolan kindly agreed to sign ten copies of the newspaper article showing Rolan with the Bronze Bust he unveiled at the Marc Bolan Memorial Gardens, Barnes, London. He even suggested that he numbered then (1/10 etc). Rolan also signed five copies of TAG's Tyrannosaurus Rex CD 'There Was A Time' (released for 2002 and available through us or Voiceprint). As well as being there for TAG I was also at the Concert with Steve Peregrin Took's guitarist Judge Trev who had been invited to guest with Mickey's T.Rex. During this time Mickey found the time to do an interview. I had already discovered Mickey's great sense of humour & sharpness of wit on the car journey from Leeds Train Station to Pennington's & it was a real & genuine pleasure to be able to chat with him in what was a very relaxed manner. Some of Mickey's interview will be added to the Bust Unveiling Double DVD along with other interviews. After sound checks & working through some numbers with the guests & regular members of T.Rex it was off to taste the famous Bradford Indian Cuisine. A big Tanx to the band's manager Barry. I know everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the private room in the restaurant. I didn't take any photographs in the restaurant as it would have broken the ambience and Rolan would be photographed enough that night as it was ! :-) Graham (Saxon) Oliver proved to be a really delightful person & it was a pleasure to meet him. Then it was back to the club in time to catch the support band. By now the club was filling & it was clear that there were going to be more people than last time! The atmosphere backstage was the usual chaos of last minute checks & periods of sitting, chatting, waiting. The gig was electric.
From backstage it really did sound like Marc was on stage. Rob was that good! The entire band were playing the tightest I've seen them play! It was a pleasure to be a part of the gig. Rolan watched much of the performance from the balcony accompanied by Rob's girlfriend Eleanor. I joined them briefly several times while filming. Linda joined the usual line-up on backing vocals which were spot on! Keep her in the line-up lads! At times it was hard wearing different 'hats' but fortunately leaving the camera running on the tripod allowed me to check that Judge Trev was ready to appear on stage & carry the bucket of red roses onstage while still recording it happening! I hope you enjoy these photographs. Very special tanx go to Linda & Eleanor, and lastly but certainly not least to Paul Fenton & of course Mickey Finn :-) Fee |
