![]() | GREETINGS TO MARC BOLAN AND T.REX FANS EVERYWHERE We hope you all had a great Summer Solstice. We are including a 'Rex-Round-Up' of 'Marc Mentions' from May onwards including one from today! We are only giving you the headline, key text along with an active link to the website with the News. What we aren't including are the numerous articles which arrive at this time every year due to Glastonbury Festival and the gig Marc 'n Mickey played. As many know, TAG Founder and Secretary writes all the web updates for this site free-of-charge, which are still done using old fashioned 'HTML' language, because this site was founded in 1996 when the 'WYSIWYG' (What You See Is What You Get) websites were simply not available and 'php' was just a dream. Fee was involved in a car accident which wrote off the car. Fortunately Fee was not seriously injured, but it has meant that the web site update could not be completed. We have been 'Tweeting' and posting on our Facebook page because it is such a quick and easy form of communication. The disadvantage is that these updates fall out of view quickly and are not archived as they are here within the main News page (here) and our 'Old News' pages which date back to 2004, although after up to 19-years some external links, and links to our old 'Flash' Video Players, no longer work. Regrettably, our updates from 1996 to 2003 inclusive are no longer accessible. Fortunately Fee is on the mend and both of us are looking forward to visiting Marc's Shrine soon for a exhausting day of work at Marc's Shrine. This will include: cleaning, tidying, cutting back the overgrowing plants, and pruning shrubs. Using a handbrush, to sweep the leaves off the PRS Memorial cobbled base Tidying up the messages on the barrel and Memory Board. Finally cleaning and then polishing the PRS Memorial and the Bronze Bust called "The Statue" by Timothy Spall in the Fabulous British Feature Film 'Bolan's Shoes'. So on with this update which has been growing on TAG's PC at TAG HQ before it was uploaded to TAG's Marc-Bolan.net Server. If this update were a creature it would be a Tyrannosaurus Rex (Roar) As always all external links open in a new window/tab so this page remains accessible. |

T.Rex (1967) "T.Rex, and more specifically frontman Marc Bolan, were truly the primal glam rock outfit. While they initially started as a folk group, Bolan shifted their sound toward rock closer to the '70s. But it wasn't until their 1971 performance on Top of the Pops, where Bolan sported glitter and satin while they played the hit "Hot Love," that a cultural shift would take place. T.Rex's influence went beyond glam rock over the years, though. Groups from the New York Dolls to The Ramones have all cited Bolan and co. as an inspiration." "We were all talking together, like, 'Let's do something together, let's create a whole experience. We all love music and want to be able to experience it; we all love hot springs and saunas and cold plunges. Let's just put it all together and create one cohesive experience,' McLaughlin explains. "We've been talking together for a while, and then we just pulled the trigger to do it." The event takes its name from a mutual appreciation for Marc Bolan, founder of glam-rock band T. We hear all Marc Bolan and T.Rex fans in the UK, Europe, Australia and the better-informed people in America. So let's see what Matt Mitchell and Miranda Wollen at 'Paste' say: "22. T. Rex: Bang a Gong (Get It On) The only big hit for glam rock icons T. Rex, Bang a Gong (Get It On) hit #10 on the Hot 100 in 1971. It was a cornerstone track on the band's album Electric Warrior, and it's become a mainstay in popular culture ever since. With bandleader Marc Bolan running the show, T. Rex would never eclipse the starpower they exuded on Bang a Gong (Get It On), nor could they ever have. It's one of those perfect, unmovable, generational tracks that only a select-few rock acts ever get an opportunity to write. Bang a Gong (Get It On) is as timeless as it is fresh and hypnotic. Tapping into it 52 years later is like tapping into it for the first time, even on the 500th listen. There's a whole cosmos of boogie that lives inside of Bang a Gong (Get It On) and what a joy it is to untangle it with every listen. MM" CLICK TO READ THE PASTE MAGAZINE ARTICLE |

![]() | T.REX AND MARC BOLAN MENTION - NIKKI SIXX NAMES HIS FAVOURITE MUSICIANS ... BOWIE #5 ... BOLAN #4 The Top 5 Musicians That Nikki Sixx Named His Favorites Ever "T-Rex, one of the most influential bands of the 1970s, left a lasting impact on the world of rock and roll throughout its 10-year career. The band was formed in London in 1967 by singer and guitarist Marc Bolan and drummer Steve Peregrin Took, initially performing under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex. Tyrannosaurus Rex's early music was characterized by its mystical and poetic lyrics, accompanied by Bolan's unique acoustic guitar style. The duo released several albums in this style, including My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair - But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows and Prophets, Seers & Sages: The Angels of the Ages." It wasn't until 1970, when Mickey Finn replaced Took, that the band adopted a more electric and rock-driven sound, changing their name to T-Rex. The band's breakthrough came with the release of their album Electric Warrior in 1971, which featured hits like Get It On and Jeepster, and helped to establish them as one of the most important bands of the glam rock movement. In 2021, Nikki Sixx commented on T-Rex's Electric Warrior album, released in 1971. The musician praised the band's founding member Marc Bolan. 'What a cool-looking album,' Sixx told about T-Rex's Electric Warrior. 'There was Marc Bolan with his guitar and this huge Marshall stack just looking like the coolest rock star on earth. You'd be getting excited even being you dropped the needle, and then it was just wow!' " CLICK TO READ THE METAL CASTLE ARTICLE |

"3. The Beatles' drummer was close to T. Rex leader Marc Bolan Bolan and T. Rex found success in the early 1970s in the wake of The Beatles' break up. Ringo and Bolan's friendship was mainly about the music. Ringo contributed to the T. Rex album The Slider by taking the cover photo. The pair collaborated on the 1972 concert film Born to Boogie (Elton John also appeared) the same year. Bolan inspired one of Ringo's biggest solo hits with the way he talked. The drummer wrote 'Back Off Boogaloo' after Bolan repeated the phrase while having dinner at Ringo's house, and the single went to No. 2 in England and No. 9 in the United States." ![]() | T.REX AND MARC BOLAN MENTION - THE SMITHS GUITARIST JOHNNY MARR Johnny Marr reveals the first single he ever bought "Johnny Marr's epiphanic music moment came early. At just age ten, the future Smiths guitarist purchased his first single from a bargain shoebox in a furniture store and uncovered a life-changing world of glam rock. A young Marr picked up a 45 record, not knowing what it was, entirely because of the picture of Marc Bolan on the label. Discussing the moment, he later told Pitchfork: "I figured I was getting more bang for my buck! I fell in love with that image. The song was 'Jeepster', and I didn't have to learn to love it because those thunking guitar riffs were so great." 'Jeepster' was released in 1971 and featured on T.Rex's pioneering glam-rock album Electric Warrior. It's a guitar-led love song based around the metaphor of the singer being a Jeepster for his girl's love. The instrumentals are borrowed from Howlin' Wolf's 1962 track 'You'll Be Mine'. The life-changing experience of listening to one T.Rex track led Marr to spend all of his money on buying singles, a habit he says hasn't really left him. Neither has his love for T.Rex, which he recalls that when 'Metal Guru' was released from the band's 1972 album The Slider, he was 'knocked sideways'. Marr said: 'Hearing it for the first time was one of those things that can only be described as transcendent – people who've had those moments with rock music will know what I'm talking about. It's not something you can get from anything else.' T.Rex played the track live on Top of the Pops in 1972. In the performance, Bolan and his bandmates don bright, glittery outfits and long hair as they command their instruments with ease. Marr recalls how the performance stunned him as a child: 'I got on my pushbike, aged ten, and rode and rode for miles until I got lost in this park in the early hours of the morning,' he said. 'It really affected me that deeply. That feeling was something I wanted to create in music.' Marr continues: 'By this time, I was already trying to hold some chords down on the guitar. I was very serious about it. I had a crummy acoustic that took a lot of love and dedication to play, but I never had to be told to practice. I never had a lesson.' Marr's early dedication led him to become one of the most celebrated guitarists of all time, gifting The Smiths listeners the same transcendent feeling T.Rex gave Marr. Though his style leaned towards melodic jangly riffs rather than thunking guitar, the influence of glam-rock and T.Rex on Marr remained. The band even wrote their 1986 pop indictment 'Panic' based on the track. Marr told Les Inrockuptibles: 'When we wrote 'Panic' Morrissey was obsessed with 'Metal Guru' and wanted to sing in the same style. He didn't stop singing it in an attempt to modify the words of 'Panic' to fit the exact rhythm of 'Metal Guru.' He also exhorted me to use the same guitar break so that the two songs are the same!' ![]() | T.REX AND MARC BOLAN MENTION - ELTON JOHN AND TONY VISCONTI ON MARC This is another article from Far Out dated from less than a month ago (29th June 2023). The one artist Elton John called "the perfect pop star" "Before his historic headline set at Glastonbury Festival 2023 – his final-ever show, John again demonstrated his understanding of music and culture" ..."In 2020, when speaking to The Guardian [UK Newspaper], he gave one of his best to date as part of a broader piece reflecting on the life and significance of the late T.Rex leader, Marc Bolan. Famously, Bolan was one of the definitive glam-rock heroes of the 1970s, the separate side of the coin to his friend David Bowie, having fans rapt with his songwriting and hypersexuality. Tragically though, in 1977, he passed away in a car accident aged 29. Reflecting on the power of Bolan, producer Tony Visconti who worked with the T.Rex man during his prime, said: 'What I saw in Marc Bolan had nothing to do with strings, or very high standards of artistry; what I saw in him was raw talent. I saw genius. I saw a potential rock star in Marc – right from the minute, the hour I met him.' As for Elton John, speaking to The Guardian, he described Bolan as 'the perfect pop star' before outlining how he influenced him when he was becoming Elton John, saying that his care-free attitude had 'a great effect on me. He was the perfect pop star John expressed. 'His songs were great, his records rocked, he had attitude, he had performing skills, he looked fabulous, he dressed the part. At a time when I was still becoming Elton John, he was a great role model. I thought:' This guy doesn't give a fuck, he's just being who he is and he's loving every single minute of it. And that had a great effect on me." CLICK TO READ THE FAR OUT ARTICLE |

![]() | T.REX AND MARC BOLAN MENTION A third article from Far Out. This one by Arun Starkey dated 11th July 2023 Peter Murphy remembers the powerful "pure decadence" of David Bowie. "Even before Bauhaus covered 'Ziggy Stardust' in 1982, there were evident parallels between frontman Peter Murphy and David Bowie. " Don't Despair, Marc is in this article which at first glance only seems to be about Bowie. "When speaking to Post-punk in 2014, before releasing his tenth solo album, Lion, Murphy was asked whether he thinks his music is reflective of the spirit of Bowie's glam counterpart, T.Rex leader Marc Bolan. Their 1971 classic, Cosmic Dancer was used as an example of this connection. Murphy replied: Right, yes, it is. 'Hollow Hills' and all of that sort of stuff. And 'Indigo Eyes' too. But yes, then I was at school and met Danny and Joseph, and they were artists, and I was arty too – I could draw well and stuff. Danny Ash and Joseph and I had a commonality." ... "Comparing Bowie and Bolan, Murphy said: 'So I bought Ziggy Stardust but I was listening to Marc Bolan much more before that, and he was beauty and light, vanity and innocence really. But then I got this other thing from Bowie. I got The Man Who Sold the World and Ziggy Stardust, and that was our staple diet. Then Danny (Ash) showed me Roxy Music's first album, especially the photographs. Danny was brave enough and had the money to go see Roxy and Bowie, but I wasn't, I was just in my hometown, living off my imagination and photographs. Nothing else. Inspired by Bowie, Bolan and Roxy Music to create his own world, Murphy explained: "There was no MTV at that point. So, I created this world in my head, I projected what I thought was happening from the evidence of the photographs. " CLICK TO READ THE FAR OUT ARTICLE |

![]() | MARC'S LAST HOME IN EAST SHEEN NAME-CHECKED IN AN "IN LONDON" ARTICLE In this review dated three days ago on the 23rd July 2023 about an Italian restaurant just a few moments walk from Marc's Last House. Josiah Mortimer: East Sheen's Valentina restaurant - home of Italian hospitality name-checks Marc saying "Hidden London provides the goods for the area's historical high-points: East Sheen was home to the Whig Prime Minister Earl Grey, the birthplace of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the world wide web, and the last dwelling place of 1970s rock star Marc Bolan - his, like others here, a large Victorian house with a walled garden. There's one detached home for every two flats in Sheen.". ![]() | HIDDEN LONDON FOCUS ON EAST SHEEN AND FULHAM The article above quotes the Hidden London web page for East Sheen, so we thought we'd check it out. You'll find a few interesting pieces of information. Some of the history might have influenced Marc and Gloria to select East Sheen* to be their first 'Proper Home' after Rolan's birth. Marc is name-checked in the Hidden London website along with other notables thus:- "East Sheen was home to the Whig prime minister Earl Grey. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, was born in East Sheen in 1955. The last home of 1970s rock star Marc Bolan was 142 Upper Richmond Road West, a large Victorian house with a corner location, surrounded by a high brick wall and foliage. It was only a short distance from here that Bolan met his death on Barnes Common in 1977." Initially Marc and Gloria rented 25 Holmead Road, Fulham**, while looking for something more suitable. Marc and Gloria obviously wanted somewhere conveniently close to Marc's Parents' home in Putney, just as Holmead Road was. Sid and Phyllis had turned their second bedroom in their very comfortable Council Flat into Rolan's own bedroom, so often did he sleep at his grand parents' home. We wonder what Marc and Gloria would have made of Hidden London's 2023 summation "East Sheen has a predominantly white, well-educated population including many families with young children.". This might be statistically accurate, but it is stated in such a matter-of-fact way is considered far less 'PC' than it would have been in 1975, when the same statistically accurate summation of East Sheen was quite probably true. COMPARING FULHAM AND EAST SHEEN - Quoting Hidden London: * - East Sheen, Richmond upon Thames - A socially advantaged locality situated south of Mortlake and east of Richmond (Richmond was originally called Sheen, or Shene) Population: 10,348 (2011 census) Compared to: ** - Fulham, Hammersmith & Fulham - A late-Victorian district occupying a broad Thames peninsula opposite Wandsworth. Population: 64,257 (Town wards, 2011 census) WE PROVIDE THIS TYPE OF INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY OUR NON-UK VISITORS Visit Hidden London's entries for EAST SHEEN OR FULHAM. ![]() | FINALLY, LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, BOLAN'S SHOES UPDATES We've seen the film and can tell everyone it is a fantastic roller-coaster of a film with emotional lows followed by fabulous feelgood highs. The script is well written and the acting is second to none by everyone, especially the children who appear as the 'younger selves' of the main characters of the film played by Timothy Spall and Leanne Best. Wonderful to see Marc Bolan's Rock Shrine in Barnes, SW London feature as a key location in the film. The Statue as Timothy Spall's character calls the Bronze Bust was unveiled by Rolan Bolan in 2002 for Marc Bolan's 25th Anniversary, so it is wonderful that Rolan, Marc Bolan's only child is involved with this film. That gives it true authority. Well Done Buffalo Dragon for bringing this Multi-Award-Winning British Feature Film Bolan's Shoes to the Silver Screen. ![]() ![]() CLICK HERE to read the review on 'Film Ink's own website |
