PAUL FENTON ON THE JOHNNIE WALKER SHOW
If you missed it on the day and didn't 'catch it' on 'replay' don't worry, you can listen to on site Here! The programme was two hours long and turned out to be a great show peppered as it was all the way through with Marc tunes and mentions :-) The main 'Marc-related stuff' was in several parts, which Kev has edited, together for your enjoyment. Note the lovely 'plug' for the 100 Club event & check out Paul's Very Generous public announcement that the band's profit will be going to TAG funds to allow us to continue to care for & improve Marc's Rock Shrine. :-) |

ROSE FUND PLAQUES
I mentioned a while ago that this was almost finished. It has now been completed, but with the resession, September and then Rexmas all of which will be a drain on everyone's pockets we have postponed the 'launch' of the fund raising plaques until the Spring 2010. This will give everyone a fairer oportunity to order one and get a Low Number than if we were to launch the plaques now, when many people who would like one might miss out. Stay tuned for the launch in the Spring. More info on the Rose Here |

MARC'S ROCK SHRINE - MORE WORLDWIDE ATTENTION
Marc's Rock Shrine makes it into an American 'London Guide Book' by the 'Not for Tourists' (for you not them) Series. Check out their web site:- http://notfortourists.com. It is listed in the 'Landmarks' Section as:-
Bolan Rock Shrine
Address: Queen's Ride, Putney, London, SW13
Memorial shrine where 70s rock star Marc Bolan died.
We don't get commission from these people, but if you are in the US and want this book then use this link to buy it for $10.00. If you are outside the US you might not want to pay the $17 extra for international shipping. Though is anyone does buy this book we'd like a scan of 'our page' (pretty please?).
It is always gratifying to know the Ten Years of Hard Work we (TAG) have put in at the place are now paying dividends - not in a financial sense, but in the 'feel good factor' way! - After all, lets take a moment to remember that in 1995 in a glossy monthly UK magazine it was described as "More shit-hole than shrine" and in 1999 the Tree was given "less than three years to live". If this sounds like blowing our own trumpet. Well Yes, just occasionally we need to remind people who have forgotten the Tree was ever in danger! |

TRIP BACK DOWN MY MEMORY LANE To the time when I lived in London and one "Steve Treatment" used to steal my make-up (or rather he'd dip into the make-up bag and sit there putting it on). An article about Steve Treatment with many Marc Bolan & T-Rex name-checks. Read it Here (outside link opens in a new window as there is a video included). |

MARC IN THE NEWS Just proving Marc's influences ... Marilyn Manson back on the road: Australian Article "There has been no real villain in your wake. People only notice train wrecks or disasters -- people getting arrested. I grew up being inspired by Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Alice Cooper -- people not only doing things to be controversial but also making changes in the world. I've always been a sceptic that one person or a song can change the world. But then look at George Bush -- he's one person who f---ed a lot of things in the world up. So I started looking at things differently making this record. I voted for the first time." Read the article online here:- http://www.news.com.au
Playing the Building: David Byrne at the Roundhouse "David Byrne is turning one of the UK's most intriguing music venues into an instrument in his installation 'Playing The Building'. Tim Burrows looks back at the building's history. The venue was no state of the art affair. 'A tip,' is how Floyd drummer Nick Mason fondly remembered the venue's early days. 'It was the sloppiest operation in the world,' says John Morris, the New Yorker responsible for opening the Rainbow Theatre, the rock venue in Finsbury park that hosted gigs by the Who, David Bowie and the Clash throughout the 1970s. 'My foot went through the floor of the balcony when I was at a Marc Bolan show there.'

'LABOUR IN WANDSWORTH' Did you know? 1970's Glam-Rocker Marc Bolan lived in Tooting. He came to live here under his real name Mark Feld in 1962, but soon moved on to trendier Barnes, the home turf of the Rolling Stones. Hmm, soon moved to barnes? labourwandsworth.org.uk Yes well not very accurate (bit like the forecasts that we are out of the recession!!) as of course Marc moved to Ladbroke Grove after living in Summertown which is in the Wimbledon/Tooting area.
101 Musicians Who Changed Their Name. This listing has
Marc Feld to Marc Bolan at 28 and David Jones to David Bowie at 29! Check out the entire listing here |

"Johnnie talks to Paul Fenton about his time in the 70s band Christie, their hit Yellow River, being asked to play for Paul McCartney, and his memories of Marc Bolan and playing with T.Rex. RIP - LES PAUL Who died on the 13th August at the ripe old age of 94. As well as the guitar made by Gibson (and others) which bears his name, as an inventor, Paul helped bring about the rise of rock 'n' roll and multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the "tracks" in the finished recording. There are loads of links on the web for more information however here are a couple of recommended ones:-

STRANGE MARC QUOTE? Anyone every heard of Marc using the phrase "Keep your bezel straight"? If you haven't then don't worry - neither had we. It comes from an interview with Kasabian
"Back in the 60s, says Meighan, "music was people's lives; it's not any more". Pizzorno reckons it's a duller scene now. "Where's David Bowie these days? And Marc Bolan?" Meighan chuckles at mention of the T.Rex idol. "Keep your bezel straight – Bolan said that." Sorry? "You know, the brush underneath Scalextric cars…"". Hmm :-? FLO & EDDIE You will probably know of the connection to Marc of Flo and Eddie otherwise known as Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan but do you know how they got those nicknames? Well I have to admit I didn't. But now I do, so I thought if I thought it was interesting then you might too! Most people know of Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan from The Turtles, who for those who don't know had some glorious pop hits in the 60s and then went into Bonzo Dog Do-Dah Band territory with their final album, Battle of the Bands, in which they impersonated a variety of fake bands. It's no wonder that Frank Zappa asked them to join the 2nd edition of the Mothers. But they couldn't use their real names for silly contractual reasons, so Zappa called them the Phlorescent Leech & Eddie, which they later shortened to Flo & Eddie. So, now you know :-) Check out the funny 2003 film My Dinner with Jimi where "The story of Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan is told -- from The Turtles to The Mothers of Invention to their solo career". You will find this film now listed in TAG'S Amazon Store. This article has been added to the main Marc Bolan & T-Rex Information Section |

MICHAEL JACKSON R.I.P. Well, you'd have had to be living in a bubble not to have noticed that Michael Jackson died recently at the age of fifty. I've always remembered his age as he was the same age as me! OK There are the usual bad jokes going around - Remember all the bad 'Marc Jokes' so we aren't making any.
Those if us in the UK will no doubt remember magazines such as this where you can see who the people who produced this 'special' thought were the 'Big Four' at the time, so for fans of Marc around Michael Jackson's age love him or loath him, Michael Jackson was an important part of our teenage years.
Our thoughts are with his children who are the real losers in all this. |

VOTE FOR MARC AS THE SEXIEST MAN Marc is in front of Tom Jones, but way behind Duran Duran, & Wham. It isn't a 'two bit' poll it is by http://music.aol.co.uk so it is worth voting! Sadly as they have groups as well as people, Duran Duran are in the lead with a whopping 4,275,483 votes which equals 70% of the poll. But we can still try and 'push' Marc up!
At the moment the rankings are:-
1) Duran Duran - 4,275,483 votes
2) Wham - 1,071,154
3) Bros - 738,524
4) Take That - 39,867
5) Marc Bolan - 20,146
6) Mick Jagger - 2,084
So ALL votes DO count towards the 'places' though maybe not to #1 or #2 (as I write). STEP 1) Beat Take That! STEP 2) Take on Bros! So Vote... Then click 'BACK' and ... Vote Again Do this OFTEN!

VOTE FOR MARC'S ROCK SHRINE AT 'SHADY OLD LADY' Yes I know I've posted this before and will keep doing it becuase much as I love Marc's first home in Hackney being next to Marc's Rock Shrine in the Most Popular This Month Listing, I have to admit its always nice to see Marc's Rock Shrine in the #1 slot. Great to see that those Pesky' Bank Job' voters seem to have got the message that they imply cannot beat Marc Bolan! LOL.
The London Rockstar Death Trail:- Yes Marc's Rock Shrine is now listed along with Jimi Hendrix; Freddie Mercury; Keith Moon; Bon Scott (AC/DC) and New York Doll Murcia |

MARC NAME DROPPED IN THE RADIO TIMES Club Member Aidan reported this on the Club Forums:- "I have just seen an article in the Radio Times about Buddy Holly on page 121. Steve Harley is talking about the forth coming 50th Anniversary of Hollys death saying at the start quote "I always think of three, above all others, who died young- Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan, and Buddy Holly. They were such originators, the real thing." It was nice to read a positive comment from Mr Harley as he has not always been so kind in the past". Agreed Aidan :-) |

POSSIBLE MARC MUSICAL? You may well have heard of this elsewhere. It is still in the working stages. Lee Mead has been approached to play the lead, but it isn't known yet if he will accept. On Lee's mnd at the moment are his Album 'Nothing Else Matters', due for release on 9th March. Obviously promoting the album (and doing some concerts, TV appearances etc to promote his album will no doubt keep him busy for some months, giving him time to decide if he does want the lead in the Marc Bolan Musical, which if it goes ahead in the West End would see Lee return there arter is successful role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. But it is also possible that Lee may decide to go with a "musical based on the film Roman Holiday." Also, don't expect the musical to be the "Marc Bolan Story" but rather a set of tableau's based on Marc's 'Hits'. Apparently whoever plays 'Marc' there will be some Lyric Changes to Marc's own words???!!! Hmm! You can read some reviews of Lee as Joseph on the BBC Web Site which includes the line "Lacking in character and with a tendency to give out towards the end of a line, his voice is not the world's greatest, or even the greatest in the show. But Mead more than fulfils the requirements, with a mop of dark curls, a wholesome, sweet manner, and a way of filling a pleated loincloth that will appeal to all sexes" from the Independent's review by Rhoda Koenig. OK Well that was a good two years ago, so I expect his voice is better and the rest of the renew sounds 'promising'! |

Folk-Pop Crossover Genius: Marc Bolan's Tyrannosaurus Rex Years There is a nice Tyrannosaurus Rex Article on the American Pop Matters Web Site. It was of extra special interest to me as you'll see from the following comment I left on the site:- "Great article with a lovely live photo (see left) of Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took taken in Kidderminster with 'local heros' Frank & Win Freeman in the background. John Peel described their 'Dace Studio' venue as "the best outside London" and the joke of course was that when it wasn't being used for all-nighter gigs it was a Dance Studio where Frank and Win taught Tap, and various other types of dance" Comment by Fee Warner from Hove (formally from Kidderminster).

AND ALMOST FINALLY ... VIDEOS - WHAT SOME TAG MEMBERS LOOK LIKE ;-)
1) Club Member Colm has put a Video from September 2008 he has made of some of TAG's Club Members enjoying themselves in London. Nice One Colm & thank you so much for your comment on your video page "ive been over from Ireland 3 times in the past year or so & i gotta say the place never ceases to take my breath away... i look forward to seeing you in September". TANX. It IS so nice to know we are appreciated. Especially when the 'few' still try to knock us.
2) I had a little video of the TAG Club get together from May 2008 - at the Tree & then Jim Thompson's Tia Eaterie. Kev usually does the videos. Small Version (5 meg) :: Larger Version (15 meg). Hmm. After this little effort I think I'll stick to letting him do them in future. I'll just send him the 'bits' LOL There will be at least one more TAG Club Members Get Together before September, & plans are already afoot on the CLUB FORUMS for Marc's Anniversary this September too, with Club Members coming from all over the UK; Europe, America and at least Two from Australia! |

|
AND FINALLY ... VIDEOS & PHOTOS TO COME

TANX TO SHADY OLD LADY I would like to thank the lovely people at 'Shady Ol' Lady' for listening. Tanx to Deborah for 'getting the ball rolling' and indeed to me too, for giving that 'ball' another push :-). In October 2008 Debora commented on the 'Shady Old Lady' for Marc's Tree page "hmmm..i dont like to hear the name "marcs death tree!"sorry if any of you think im out of order here....i do like to go there & contemplate...it wasnt the tree that killed him was it...as far as im concerened...marcs not dead....he is in the breeze..the sound of the birds singing...and hes in our hearts......,i have been a fan of his since the age of 9...thats 37 yrs of loving him!! omg!!i really dont feel as old as that!..mind you,,,all you bolan mates make me feel young...and i say a big tanx!!! xxxx (deborah)" Yes we've said that before about the site being listed as "Marc's Death Tree" so earlier this month I added my own comment:- "I agree. Now that the site is recognised as Marc Bolans Rock Shrine by Enjoy England (formally the English Tourist Board) as a Site of Rock n Roll Importance in their guide England Rocks (www.england-rocks.co.uk) can we have the name changed to Marc Bolans Rock Shrine or just Marc Bolans Tree please Shady Old Lady Gang? Fingers Crossed. (Fee)" Well that was good enough for the peeps at 'Shady Ol' Lady' so now when you visit the page which you should do OFTEN to keep Marc in the NUMBER ONE slot the site is listed as "Marc Bolan's Rock Shrine, in London". Job Done, there I think! |

MARC MENTION IN A SKATEBOARD BLOG & MARC ON A SKATEBOARD ALBUM The amazing thing about This Blog is that the blogger (Kilwag) states he is listening to a band called The Trilobites. The weird thing is that I have a Trilobites album which I found on eBay when I was searching for Trilobite fossils for my collection! I bought the album as the cover was crazy and the title 'Savage Mood Swings' sounded the sort of thing that might well be interesting. And actually it is a darn good album. But I digress. The write up is interesting and gives a link to a review of an album entitled "This is Skateboard Music". The review states:- The only credible artist on the compilation is T.Rex. with his song "Skateboard" that appears in demo form at the end. Amazingly, this track may only be available on This is Skateboard Music." As this review is a good one, I have Archived it as a page in the Main Marc Bolan & T-Rex information Pages |

| The most massive apologies for the delay in getting this update finished. I have been working on it on and off since the beginning of November. As most people know Kev, & I all do this 'For Love' & never for money & so have to fit this in around our 'real lives', which turned out to be hectic this month. Also, this is a BIG Update so it has taken quite a while to finish. I promise that I will be updating the Club Site on the usual regular Weekly Basis from now on - with Free Site Updates whenever they are needed & can be fitted in. One of the reasons is that we've been working with The Dolmen - a Fantastic Celtic Rock/Folk band. I didn't realise we'd had such an impact on the band until hints were dropped that we'd inspired the lead singer Taloch to pen a song in Tribute to one of his All Time Fave Singer/Songwriters of his Teenage Years ... Yes you've guessed it - Bringing the Outside In is dedicated to "Marc Bolan & T-Rex" who get a thanks in the Album Liner Notes with a link to the TAG Web Site :-) OK That's it from me. Laser Love Fee |

MARC BOLAN TRIBUTE REXMAS SINGLE If you have your 'Sounds' turned on then you should be hearing a 1 Minute Clip of the Dolmen's New Single Bringing the Outside In which is released on the 1st December. Check Out the Hot Love-style 'La La La La La La's. The Video (below) shows the band at the Children of Artemis's Witchfest in London playing the song for the second time ever, so it isn't at all 'polished'. They are accompanied by the 'Tribe of Kismet' who are the Children of Artemis's very own Belly Dancers. To hear Bringing the Outside In dedicated to Marc Bolan & T-Rex in front a crowd of 2,000 in London last month is amazingly Cool! But even 'Cooler' will be if they can get it into the 'Indie Charts' - Imagine if it's the Christmas Indie #1? How Bolan-Tastic, especially when it can be bought for the princely sum of 80p (and they take credit/debit cards & Pay Pal too). So why not 'splash out' (LOL) Read the Lyrics Here

BUY MARC'S CAR at BONHAM'S LONDON OLYMPIA This is being sold tomorrow (1st December) but somehow as it is expected to fetch in the region of £170,000 - £200,000 I think most of us will simply be watching rather than bidding! It is the "The Earls Court Motor Show, 1970 Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona' Coupé" described on Classic Driver's Web Site thus: "The Earls Court Motor Show, 1970 Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona' Coupé - A desirable 'Plexiglass' car ... has the distinction of once being owned by 1970s superstar Marc Bolan. It's probably considerably safer than a Mini, too." Ouch! :-(
A better write up can be found on the Daily Telegraph Web Site: "A rather more glam lot is the ex-Marc Bolan, 1970 Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona' coupe. This car, one of only 350 Series 1 Daytonas built, was ordered from Maranello Concessionaires by Rob Walker in November 1968 and starred at the 1970 Earl's Court Motor Show. It has had a plethora of owners, as proven by the comprehensive history file accompanying the car. Bolan is believed to have bought the Daytona in 1971 and used it until 1973. It went to Japan in 1975, returning to the UK in 1989, since when it has had another four owners. " Many Tanx to Club Member Roni for tipping us off on this item & for the second link :-) |

KEITH MORRIS: PARTING SHOTS – AN EXCLUSIVE EXHIBITION AT PROUD CENTRAL Proud Central presents Keith Morris: Parting Shots, the only opportunity to exclusively view this personal collection from one of Britain's greatest rock photographers, who died in a tragic diving accident in June 2005. Spanning the whole of Morris' career from his early images of a nude Germaine Greer to iconic photographs of BB King, Proud will bring together both his most recognised works plus rare images to present a unique cross section of Morris' work.
In the early 1970's Morris was asked to shoot a session for the debut album artwork of little known singer-songwriter, Nick Drake. These images captured Drake's shy, uneasy temperament so perfectly that Morris became the only photographer the cult artist would collaborate with before his untimely death in 1974.
Proud Central will honour and explore this exceptional relationship by presenting an extended space dedicated solely to Morris' moving images of Drake, showing the artist's world-weary, fragile temperament in a way only Morris could.
A former apprentice to David Bailey, Morris began his photographic career snapping the inhabitants of a south Wales mining town and soon took to shooting in the streets of 1960's London. What these images revealed was Morris' unique capacity to tell a story.
This ability, noticed by Drake, was once again recognised by glam-rocker Marc Bolan, with whom Morris developed a similar relationship. He toured extensively with the musician and became the house photographer on the Born to Boogie set – shooting Elton John, Marc Bolan and Ringo Starr extensively.
Proud Central will explore this unique ability in an exhibition that exposes the who's who of the music world, in a way not seen before. Featuring amazing images of the Damned, Elvis Costello, the Rolling Stones, The Who, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin and many more; Proud Central will present the only opportunity to see the complete exhibition, which will not tour after its time at Proud.

Keith told me that their homes were literally 100 yards apart "as the crow flies", but unless you could 'walk on water' over the canal then it was further as you had to walk along the canal to the nearest bridge; cross over and then walk back along the other wise of the same canal! |

THE SUPERSIZERS GO SEVENTIES On Tuesday June 10, 2008 Club Member Trisha reported on the Club Forums: "Hi All, Did anyone see this programme on BBC2 earlier this evening? Anyway T Rex were well represented as background music, I missed the first 10 minutes so they may have also been on then, but Get It On came on, then 20th Century Boy, then Jeepster, Get It On again, then finally at the very end, One Inch Rock (the first time I've heard that one as background). They were only played for a few seconds, but its still nice to hear them, especially to hear them suddenly when they weren't expected! " This prog is bound to be repeated (It is part of a series of 'Supersizers Go ...' programmes so keep an eye out for it! Many Tanx Trisha :-)
